Automatic Emergency Braking is an advanced safety feature found on newer vehicles that can apply the brakes before the driver reacts in certain situations. The technology aims to reduce collisions, or reduce their impact.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which rates and grades vehicles on a variety of categories like headlights and crash test systems, announced the goal of Automatic Emergency Braking should be to reduce collisions with pedestrians.
The IIHS’ new program rates vehicles as basic, advanced or superior, based on their ability to avoid or mitigate a crash with pedestrian dummies. The tests consist of three different test track scenarios operated at different speeds.
